Lumigo

Overview

Lumigo is more than just a solar-powered lamp—it transforms contrasts into connections, turning darkness into light, solitude into shared moments, and challenges into storytelling opportunities. Designed for children in vulnerable communities, Lumigo fosters independence while strengthening social bonds through play and collective narratives. By making light, play, and communication accessible, it supports every child’s right to safety, creative expression, and meaningful interaction.

  • Developed during the Master’s in Design for Kids and Toys at Politecnico di Milano.
  • Exhibited at Baby & Toys Milano 2025.
  • Team project: Norma Jara, Alondra Rubio, Mariam Hussein, Thaïs Rowe.
  • My role: sketching, character design, rendering, and visual storytelling.

  1. Research (Discover + Define)

Studied challenges faced by children in vulnerable communities (poverty, trauma, lack of access to electricity, limited resources).

Insights: children use play as a coping mechanism to deal with fear and isolation; light can be a tool for both safety and creativity.

Method: field research, desk studies, “Mandala Method” for problem framing.

2. Ideation & Concept Development

From early sketches of portable shapes (briefcase-style) to character-based forms that children could identify with.

Explored how light, color, and projection of shadows could encourage self-expression

3. Prototyping & Testing (Develop)

Multiple prototypes iterated through user feedback and sketching.

Exhibited prototype: produced with 3D printing and LED light, shown at Baby & Toys Milano 2025.

Production vision: designed to be manufactured using recycled plastic milk bottles and a solar panel for sustainable large-scale impact.

Exhibition

Exhibited at Baby & Toys Milano 2025, Milan, Italy (May 2025), as part of the Master’s program projects.
